The Whitworth Art Gallery, (see http://www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk/)

has recently undergone a £15 million development, and there are several exhibitions at the time of our visit which will be of interest to members. These include an exhibition celebrating the centenary of pioneering post-war textile designer Tibor Reich, a Wallpaper Exhibition, and Revolutionary Textiles 1910 – 1939.

The Hat Works Museum is situated in the grade 2 listed Wellington Mill which was once a hat factory. The lower ground floor of exhibits takes you on a journey through the history of the once thriving hatting industry of Stockport.

The gallery on the first floor has examples of over 400 hats from across the world and through time, and the Hats Amazing Exhibition. On the second floor there is a souvenir shop. Our tour will be led by an expert demonstrator who will share their knowledge of the history of the hatting industry and will give you an insight of the processes involved in producing a hat. You will also learn about the cottage industry, visit a typical hatter’s cottage, observe original working

Victorian machinery, and much more.

The cost of the trip will be £20 (for both adults and concessions) which will include the coach fare, entrance fee and tour of the Hat Works Museum, tea/coffee and biscuits at the museum, and the coach driver’s tip. Entrance to the Whitworth Gallery is free. Young Embroiderers’ will go free when accompanied by a paying adult, and family and friends are, as always, welcome to join us.

Cheques, made payable to The Derbyshire Embroiderers’ Guild, can be posted to me, Elizabeth Roberts, at 27 Springdale Court, Mickleover, Derbyshire. DE3 9SW. If you have any questions you can contact me by e-mail at liz@springdalecourt.co.uk or by telephone 01332 519538.
