Derbyshire EG visit to Quilt Museum

posted 6 May 2015, 03:55 by Suella Postles
Derbyshire EG visit to Quilt Museum. This year our annual outing will take place on Saturday the 8th August and is a visit to the Quilt Museum and Gallery at York. We would like to invite members of the West Bridgford branch to join us.

Our trip will coincide with the museum’s summer exhibition entitled Ancestral Gifts. This is a unique exhibition, one of the most colourful and thought-provoking ever hosted by the museum, and has been created in collaboration with its patron Kaffe Fassett. Kaffe has chosen fifteen quilts from The Quilters’ Guild Collection dating from 1780 to 1949, and has created fifteen new quilts in response to them. In addition to his stunning new quilts, Kaffe is also lending the museum items from his studio, books, textile designs and things he has collected on his travels. The thirty quilts and accompanying artefacts will fill the two main galleries at the Quilt Museum; the third gallery will be given over to creativity and interactivity with a flannel wall for aspiring designers and a Touchy-Feely wall for those who simply can't resist the lure of fabric. When the exhibition closes in York in September it will then tour to two venues in the United States from Autumn 2015.

The museum has a shop which stocks books and souvenirs relating to the collections at the Museum, and quilting and textiles from around the British Isles.

The museum is due to close in October of this year making this our last opportunity to visit. This, together with its close proximity to the City of York with its Minster, museums, craft shops, famous Shambles shopping area, chocolate factory and shops, will make this a very popular trip and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Our coach will leave Derby Bus Station, bay 28, at 08:30 a.m. and the journey will take approximately two and a half hours. We will leave York for the homeward journey at 16:00 p.m.

The cost of the journey plus admission to the museum is £17.00 for adults, £16.00 for concessions, and £14.00 for Quilters’ Guild Members. For those who wish to visit the city only and not the museum the cost of the coach journey will be £11.00.  Family and friends are, as always, welcome to join us. Children’s admission to the museum is free when accompanied by an adult. I am now taking bookings and cheques, made payable to The Derbyshire Embroiderers’ Guild, can be posted to me at 27 Springdale Court, Mickleover, Derbyshire. DE3 9SW by 18th July at the latest. If you have any questions you can contact me by e-mail at liz@springdalecourt.co.uk or by telephone 01332 519538.

Kind regards,
Elizabeth Roberts,
Derbyshire Branch Secretary.
