Ely Cathedral, in conjunction with The Royal School of Needlework, is to hold a unique exhibition of Ecclesiastical Embroidery during February 2015. There will be over 60 impressive displays, which will include significant pieces of needlework worked on and held as part of the Royal School’s collection at Hampton Court Palace. Highlights will be six of the twelve Litany of Loreto panels, bequeathed to the Royal School by a convent in Sussex, and rarely on display to the public, together with pieces depicting theological figures and symbols using a wide range of threads and embroidery techniques, as well as rare examples of white work, altar cloths, burses and stoles. The exhibition will also include artefacts from Ely Cathedral’s own collection such as a Mediaeval Cope, an 18th century gold vestment set, the recently restored white altar frontal, and an 11th century gilded bronze chasuble pin, originally from the tomb of Archbishop Wulfstan at Ely.

The trip is to take place on Saturday the 21st February, leaving Derby at 09:00. One stop at 9.15am leaving the Nottingham Knight, Loughborough Road, Ruddington (NG11 6LS). The journey will take about 3 hours, arriving at Ely Cathedral at approximately 12:00, with departure for home at 16:00. Drop off and pick up would be directly outside the Cathedral. Refreshments – cakes, lunches, afternoon teas - are available both inside the Cathedral and in the Cathedral grounds.

If Derbyshire EG were able to fill a coach (49 passengers) the cost of the journey and admission would be £20.00 per person. If you have any questions you can contact Liz by e-mail at liz@springdalecourt.co.uk or by telephone 01332 519538.

If any of our WBEG members would like to book a place on the trip they can do so by mailing a deposit of £5.00 or the full £20:00 to me at 27 Springdale Court, Mickleover, Derbyshire. DE3 9SW. Cheques to be made payable to The Derbyshire Embroiderers’ Guild. Book by Saturday the 17th of January 2015.
